Shot dead when he and a sailor were ambushed while walking through Ballylongford, County Kerry.
About 9.20pm Constable Howlett was walking through the village of Ballylongford, County Kerry, alongside a Naval Rating, when they were ambushed and shot. The sailor survived but Constable Howlett sustained fatal injuries.
George was from Yorkshire and had two months’ service with the Royal Irish Constabulary. His mother was sent £1,000 to compensate for his murder.
