Circumstances

A suspect presented himself at West Ham Police Station, when asked to empty his pockets he produced a pistol and began shooting, narrowly missing an officer. He ran out of the station, pursued by police. Sergeant Hutchins was driving in the area when he spotted the armed man, he tackled him but was fatally shot.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.
