Killed as he attempted to board a moving train at Stoke-on-Trent Railway Station but fell between the carriage and the platform.
The incident occurred about 8:00pm as PC Smith attempted to board an incoming train from Derby to assist in collecting tickets from the passengers.
He was survived by his wife and five children.
