Died in the infirmary soon after being fatally injured when he was struck by a taxi-cab while on night patrol in Garstang Road, Preston.
Sergeant Wallbank, a drill instructor with Preston Borough Police, was on Boxing Day night duty when, on Garstang Road, he was struck by a taxi-cab and carried ten yards on the bonnet.
He was taken to the local infirmary at 11:45pm but died soon after at 12:10am.
A civilian was also struck by the taxi but survived. The taxi driver was later charged with manslaughter.
