Fatally wounded, alongside six other officers, five of whom died the previous day when, about 7:00pm, their patrol of twenty men, returning from Bundorragha to Westport, was ambushed by between 70 and 100 terrorists, at Carrowkennedy, County Kerry. The battle raged for about three-and-a-half hours.
