Died when he fell into the River Clyde and drowned, near Custom House Quay.

Another officer, Sergeant Roberts, who had been crossing the Portland Street suspension bridge, heard splashing and saw someone struggling in the water nearby. He called for assistance and PC McAulay’s body was found about an hour later.
