Circumstances

Patrolling near to the St George's brewery, between Church Lane and Union Street, he was drawn to a street row near the fire station. He went over and as he moved through the crowd he was set upon and pushed to the ground. During the struggle he was able to summon assistance by blowing his police whistle. Other Constables arrived to see three men atop of PC Thompson, they made off and PC Thompson realised he had been stabbed in the stomach. He died in the street.
