Died two days after being fatally wounded when a terrorist unit attacked an RIC patrol in Midleton, County Cork. Posthumously awarded the Constabulary Medal for Gallantry.
Constable Arthur W. Thorp died of his wounds on 30th December and Special Constable Martin Mullen was killed during a second ambush, on 29th December, after being sent with other officers, as reinforcements, following the original attack.
