Killed alongside two of his colleagues, Constables Martin John Greer and Daniel Hoey, as they were crossing the road at the junction of Parliament Street and Essex Street in Dublin city centre, on their way to have lunch in the Ormond Hotel, when they were confronted and shot by three terrorists, having been targeted due to their roles as police orderlies at Dublin Castle.
