Died in Birr Military Barracks two days after being shot alongside Constable John Dunne, who died on 18th May, when their cycle patrol, which had been serving summonses, was ambushed in the village of Kinnitty about seven miles from Birr, County Offaly. The patrol had passed through the village earlier that day and the gunmen laid in wait knowing that the patrol would return by the same route. Two other officers were wounded in the attack.
