Circumstances

Shot dead in an ambush as he walked from his home to his barracks in Kilbrittain, Co. Cork. Police inside the barracks heard the shots, assuming the barracks was under attack they took up defensive positions and fired in the direction of the shots.

In the months leading up to his killing, Constable Bolger had been involved in a number of search and arrest operations in the locality. Two months previously he had arrested seven local terrorists and was a witness against them at their trial. These men were released two days before the shooting.
