Shot dead in an ambush as, unarmed, he walked the short distance from his home to his barracks in Kilbrittain, County Cork. Officers inside the barracks heard the shots and, assuming the barracks were under attack, they took up defensive positions and fired in the direction of the shots.
In the months leading up to his killing, Constable Bolger had been involved in a number of search and arrest operations in the locality. Two months previously he had arrested seven local terrorists and was a witness against them at their trial. These men were released two days before the shooting.
