Died in the Royal Infirmary three days after being savagely beaten during Hogmanay Riots in Edinburgh.
During the New Year’s Eve Hogmanay Riots of 1811, in The Tron Kirk area of Edinburgh, organised gangs of youths formed a plan to attack the police and drive them from the streets in order to assault and rob revellers celebrating the New Year.
Watchman Campbell was attacked and savagely beaten and died three days later in the Royal Infirmary.
A sixteen year old was later convicted of the murder and, on 22nd April 1812, he and two others aged eighteen years, were hanged in Stamp Office Close, where Dugald had been attacked.
