Fatally shot when his auxiliary patrol of 12 men, in civilian clothing, raided the Shannon View Hotel, Castleconnell, County Limerick, where three off-duty RIC officers fired on the auxiliaries, believing them to be terrorists. In the ensuing exchange of fire, RIC Sergeant William John Hughes and the hotel proprietor were also killed.
