With two colleagues he had stopped to question the occupants of a van parked in Braybrook Street near Wormwood Scrubs prison. DC Wombwell was shot by in the head by the front seat passenger of the van.

Shot in the head and killed, by the front-seat passenger of a van parked in Braybrook Street, near Wormwood Scrubs prison, as he questioned the three occupants. DS Christopher Tippet Head and PC Geoffrey Roger Fox were also killed in the same incident.
