Shot dead by terrorists while on foot patrol.
On foot Inspector Ead was supervising beat patrols, having just checked one he was walking to another some distance away when two gunmen ambushed him. He was shot from behind and died instantly.
Originally from Plymouth he joined the RUC after serving in the British Army.
Survived by his wife and their two daughters.
