Circumstances

Commencing an early turn he left to serve a summons on a male. He was later found fatally wounded by colleagues who had become concerned when he didn't answer his radio. He was shot in the head by a male he had stopped and recorded nominal details of at Norwood Edge Plantation near Harrogate.

Shot dead next to his patrol car, at a picnic site at Norwood Edge Plantation near Otley, soon after commencing duty at 6:00am to serve a summons on a poacher in the Washburn Valley, near Harrogate. Details in his notebook, of a man he had questioned at the site, led to the identification of his killer who later also shot and killed Police Sergeant David Thomas Winter.
