Dan joined the Metropolitan Police six months earlier, having transferred from Hampshire Constabulary where he was a Roads Policing officer and instructor. He had also served in Surrey Police. He was based at the driving academy.

Over several years he had escorted and protected The Queen and many others at national events and international summits. He had hoped to gain a full-time role with the Special Escort Group (SEG).
