Died in hospital after being shot in the neck at point blank range while attending reports of a man assaulting his wife at St. Andrew’s Road in Gorleston, Norfolk.

 

The 56-year-old man, who was a rat catcher, poacher and known thief, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death but he was later declared insane and reprieved. He spent the rest of his days in Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital in Berkshire.

 

PC Alger left a wife and four children under the age of ten.
