Died the day after he was fatally wounded by the detonation of an unexploded bomb while checking bomb damage following an overnight enemy air raid at the Royal Albert Dock, West Ham. His colleague, PC Robert Charles Winney, died the previous day. Both officers were posthumously awarded a King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct in Civil Defence.
