Died in hospital the day after being fatally wounded when he and two colleagues were ambushed by terrorists.
On the afternoon of 21st October 1920, Constable Rippingale and two colleagues left their barracks in Leap to arrest a man in the village of Glandore, County Cork, though the man was not at home at the time. On their return journey they were ambushed and fired upon by terrorists armed with shotguns. The RIC men returned fire but were, once again, fired upon. Constable Rippingale was fatally wounded and died in Cork Military Hospital the next day.
His colleague, Constable Albert Edward Rundle, died from his wounds two weeks later, on 4th November. The third officer was wounded but survived.
