Died twelve days after being shot and fatally wounded when his convoy came under heavy and accurate fire after being ordered to report to Slane as part of additional security measures.

Died from the wounds he sustained twelve days earlier, on 28th April, after being ordered to report to Slane as part of additional security measures demanded by the Marquis of Slane as a consequence of the Easter Rising. At Kilmoon the convoy halted and was told by locals that rebels in Ashbourne were eager for a fight. About 12:30pm the convoy pulled up short of Rath Cross and began to disembark when it came under heavy and accurate fire. Seven other officers died on the day.
