Drowned when he fell into the reservoir he was guarding.
On night duty 10pm until 6am he was with Special Constable Potter guarding the Albert Reservoir. The two took it in turns, one stationed outside and the other inside the reservoir wall, alternating every hour throughout their shift.
Just after midnight SC Brotherton shouted a hello from over the parapet to Sgt Nuttall who was supervising that night. A short time later PC Mitchell who was passing by heard cries for help, he raced to the sound and found SC Potter there but SC Brotherton was missing. A short time later they saw a cap floating on the water. About 1.45am his body was found.
He resided at 33 Marquis Street in Halifax with his wife. He became a special constable at the beginnng of February.
