Died of the injuries he sustained the previous day when he was struck by a tram and thrown into the path of a horse-drawn vehicle.
PC Stewart had just helped an elderly woman cross the road and was crossing back over when he was struck by an electric tram on Sauchiehall Street at the junction of Wellington Street. The tram knocked him into the path of a horse-drawn vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and he died of his injuries the following day.
He had served with the police for about 25 years’ police service and was survived by his wife and three children.
