Died in Augsburg Prison, Germany, ten months after being deported and subsequently tortured and deprived of food and clothes.
In the winter of 1941-42, during the German occupation of Guernsey, PC Smith was one of sixteen police officers deported to prisons and labour camps in Europe for stealing food from the occupying army to help prevent civilians from going hungry. Having been beaten and deprived of food and clothes when it was terribly cold the officer died in Augsburg Prison, Germany.
