Died in Meath Hospital the morning after he was found lying on the road after being thrown from his horse.
After leaving Kevin Street Police Barracks on mounted patrol, PC Brereton’s colleague’s horse became lame. His colleague dismounted and was removing a stone from the horse’s hoof when the animal bolted. Robert, who had remained mounted, gave chase but was later thrown from his horse and fatally injured.
He was found lying on the road near Dolphin’s Barn, near Dublin, and died in hospital the following morning.
