Fatally wounded whilst on patrol in an IRA bomb and gun attack.

Died in hospital, three days after being fatally wounded, together with Constable Thomas R. Johnston, who died on 21st January, when their ten-man patrol was involved in a terrorist bomb and gun attack as it crossed Parnell Bridge in the city of Cork. The eight remaining officers were all wounded.
