Circumstances

After escaping the Kilmichael ambush on 28 November he was caught and shot two days later by the IRA.

Caught and shot dead two days after escaping the ambush on his auxiliary division mobile patrol by a large terrorist unit at Dus a’ Bharraigh, in the townland of Shanacashel, Kilmichael Parish, near Macroom, County Cork, when a District Inspector, a Temporary Constable and fourteen other Temporary Cadets were killed.

He served in the Royal Flying Corps during the Great War.
