Died after being shot four times in his bed at his lodgings in Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin.
At the time of this shooting Sergeant Fitzgerald was recovering from the wounds he sustained in an earlier assassination attempt that he survived by pretending to be dead after being kidnapped and shot by terrorists.
