One of two Intelligence Officers who were abducted by terrorists, interrogated and killed in Knockraha, County Cork.
On 15th November 1920, Lionel and his colleague, Auxiliary Cadet Bertram Vivian Archer Agnew, left Macroom on twenty-four hours’ leave and travelled to Cork City where they stayed overnight in The Imperial Hotel. They left the hotel the following morning and were never seen again.
It was later established that both men had been abducted by terrorists, interrogated and shot dead in ‘The Rea’ area of Knockraha, County Cork, on 16th November. Their bodies are believed to have been buried in a bog between Cork and Macroom.
