Circumstances

He was Chief Intelligence Officer for the Royal Irish Constabulary in the West Cork region. The accuracy of the information he received from local contacts was having a demoralizing effect on the IRA, following a number of raids and arrests of their men. He was gunned down by two men in the porch of St. Patricks in Bandon as he entered the church to attend Mass.

Constable Mulherin was the Chief Intelligence Officer for the Royal Irish Constabulary in the West Cork region. The accuracy of the information he received from his contacts was having a demoralising effect on local terrorists, following a number of raids and arrests of their men. Having already survived an attempt on his life in March and realising his life was in danger, he took every precaution to ensure his safety but, nevertheless, he was killed entering church.
