He was part of a three man RIC party based at Innishannon, who were ambushed while on patrol at Ballinspittal, a village mid-way between Kinsale and Bandon, by members of the IRA. He was shot and killed outright.

Shot and killed alongside his colleague, Sergeant Cornelius Crean, when their three-man patrol, based in Innishannon, was ambushed by terrorists at Upton Industrial School in Ballinspittal, a village mid-way between Kinsale and Bandon, County Cork.
