Fatally shot alongside his colleague, Constable Michael James Murphy, who died the previous day, after their cycle patrol was ambushed by terrorist gunmen at Ennistymon, County Clare, as they were returning to a protection hut. Sergeant Riordan managed to return fire and from evidence found at the scene it was obvious that one of the attackers had been hit.
