Circumstances

Ambushed by an IRA assassination squad, shot in the back and killed.

Died after being shot in the back of the head by a terrorist assassination squad as he returned, shortly after 6:00pm, from the police offices at Dublin Castle to the private hotel in Harcourt Street where he was residing. He was just a few yards from the door when two shots were fired, both of which hit him.
