Died in St. Thomas' Hospital from a fractured skull after being assaulted by a drunken man while making an arrest in Elsted Street, Walworth.

Circumstances

Patrolling in Elsted Street, Walworth he had cause to make an arrest when a drunk male interfered, PC Rowland pushed the drunk back and told him to not become involved. The drunk, enraged, came forward and punched PC Rowland to the mouth causing him to fall unconscious to the ground. Both the drunk and the prisoner ran off. PC Rowland was found in the street and removed to St Thomas' Hospital but died of concussion.

The officer had initially pushed the man back and told him not to become involved but, enraged, the drunken man came forward and punched PC Rowland to the mouth, causing him to fall unconscious to the ground and allowing the man and the prisoner to run off.
