One of two officers who were fatally shot while trying to apprehend an armed suspect who had earlier presented himself at West Ham Police Station and, when asked to empty his pockets, produced a gun and started shooting, narrowly missing an officer. The man then ran out of the station, pursued by police. Sergeant Hutchins was driving in the area when he spotted the armed man and tackled him but was fatally shot.
