Circumstances

A suspect presented himself at West Ham Police Station, when asked to empty his pockets he produced a pistol and began shooting, narrowly missing an officer. He ran out of the station, pursued by police. Inspector Pawsey was driving to work when he received a radio message about the armed male, shortly after he located the male but was shot and killed.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.
