Died in hospital six days after sustaining serious head injuries during a pursuit of armed robbers.

Following a robbery at a house in Dagenham early on the morning of 11th April, armed response officers pursued a suspect car into a road in Newham, East London, and while attempting to stop and arrest the escaping suspects, PC Toms sustained severe head injuries from which he later died in hospital.

Gary was appointed in January 2002 serving in Barking and Dagenham Borough and with the North East Territorial Support Group for three years before moving in November 2008 to the CO19 Firearms Unit based at Leman Street.

He is survived by his wife and his mother and sister.
