Circumstances

After unarmed officers, attending an early morning disturbance at a house in Shrewsbury, were held at gunpoint, PC Gray arrived at the scene with an armed response unit; the officers found their colleagues being held in an alleyway at the side of the house, PC Gray placed himself between the gunman and the two unarmed officers and confronted the gunman and was ordering him to put the gun down when he was shot in the head with a rifle and fatally wounded.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.
