Died from a fractured skull that he sustained while making an arrest in a hostile crowd.

On the night of 25 December 1871 Constable Gibson was on duty with another Constable in Westbar. About 11pm they were summoned to deal with a complaint about a man using a whip to assault people in Spring Street. As they arrived they observed the man and saw him to use the whip to strike a number of people. Both Constables immediately apprehended the man however he resisted arrest.

 

A considerable crowd formed and they began to attack the Constables to free the arrested man. Constable Gibson was struck a considerable blow by an unknown person using a blunt object which fractured his skull.

 

Constable Gibson remained on duty for two more days but then had to report sick due to his injury, he never returned to duty dying weeks later from the fracture to his skull. He had six years service with the Borough Police.
