Circumstances

On 7 January after a stolen car was abandoned in Bulwell, Nottingham, Ged Walker, a dog handler, gave chase on foot with his dog; he attempted to arrest the suspect as he drove away in another car, Ged was dragged along the road by the car and suffered serious head injuries from which he later died.

Died two days after sustaining serious head injuries, as a result of being dragged one hundred yards along the road and thrown into a stone bollard, while attempting to arrest a suspect who drove away in a second car after PC Walker had given chase with his police dog, following the abandonment of a stolen taxi in Bulwell, Nottingham.

PC Walker had 24 years service. He joined the police cadets as soon as he left school at the age of 16 and was appointed to the force in 1978. He had been a member of the force dog section since 1987 and was stationed at headquarters at Sherwood Lodge. In 1990 he received a judge’s commendation for saving the life of a potential suicide.

He was survived by his wife, their daughter and son.
