Found dead in the Trent Mersey Canal having been beaten and stabbed after going missing on duty.
PC Green expressed his intention to spend some time in plain clothes keeping observation on a farm worker who resided at Moss Green near the hamlet of Elworth. The farm worker had several previous convictions for larceny and was believed to be engaged in petty pilfering.
James was not seen again until, after continual inquiries, his body was recovered from the Trent Mersey Canal at Moss Bridge, a quarter of a mile from the farm worker’s cottage. Medical evidence noted the cause of death to be the rupture of internal organs combined with twenty-three cut wounds caused by a sharp instrument about the head.
PC Green, who was a native of Handbridge, Chester, was stationed at Bradwall, near Sandbach, and had six years service with the force.
