Fatally injured when he was deliberately run down while trying to stop a suspect car in West Belfast.

Attending a call in Anderstontown Park West with colleagues they were made aware of a suspect vehicle travelling in their direction. Constable Thompson, along with other officers, made their way on foot in the direction from which the vehicle might approach. Seeing the vehicle he attempted to stop it in Upper Kennedy Way, West Belfast, but the suspect failed to stop, the car struck him and he was fatally injured.

He had 18 years service with the force and was stationed at Andersontown.

He was survived by his wife and two children.
