Superintendent Buchanan was shot dead alongside his colleague, Chief Superintendent Henry Alexander Breen, as they drove home from a meeting in Dundalk, to discuss a possible joint RUC/Garda operation, when they were ambushed by terrorists, on the Edenappa Road near Jonesborough, County Armagh, just a few hundred yards over the border.
