Fatally shot by terrorist gunmen when he was ambushed while on foot patrol in Dungiven Road, Derry.

Less than two-and-a-half years later, on 2nd June 1976, William’s daughter, Reserve Constable Linda Emmeline Baggley, died after being shot in a similar attack, less than 100 yards from where her father was killed.
