Fatally stabbed when he was attacked while working undercover in West Kingsdown, Kent, during a surveillance operation.

At the time of the incident, John was part of a team investigating the laundering of gold stolen fourteen months earlier, on 26th November 1983, from a warehouse operated by Brink’s-Mat, on the Heathrow International Trading Estate in London.
