Double crewed in a Police Landrover he responded to an the early morning report of an iron bar lying across two lanes of the tunnel; the police vehicle brought traffic to a halt and Constable McIntyre got out to remove the obstruction. As he did so a 22 ton lorry and trailer failed to stop striking both a private car and the police vehicle before hitting him and dragging him 120 feet to his death.

Fatally injured as he and a colleague responded to an early morning report of an iron bar lying across two lanes of the Mersey Tunnel. Having already brought the traffic to a halt, PC McIntyre left his vehicle to remove the object but, as he did so, a 22-ton lorry and trailer with defective brakes failed to stop and struck a private car and the police Land Rover before hitting and dragging the officer 120 feet.
